USD 23 Billion in Data Centers Is Squeezing the PCB Supply Chain

A 2.87 GW pipeline competes with PCB fabs for copper, busway, sheet metal, and skilled contractors in the same EEC corridor. The overlap is the Phase 2 marketplace.

USD 23.1B
BOI-approved data-center investment, 2025

Thailand's data center construction boom is the largest contiguous capital deployment in Southeast Asian digital infrastructure history. With a pipeline exceeding 2.87 GW as of September 2025, 3.7 times Indonesia's planned capacity, the market is projected to grow from USD 1.45 billion in 2025 to USD 6.29 billion by 2031 at 27.71% CAGR. At USD 7-8 million per MW, this implies USD 18-25 billion in construction capex over five to seven years.

The BOI approved 36 data center projects representing over USD 23.1 billion in 2025 alone, with 7 additional projects worth USD 3.1 billion cleared in January 2026. Approvals span Bangkok, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Pathum Thani, Rayong, and Samut Prakan, provinces where PCB manufacturing clusters are simultaneously expanding.

Hyperscalers and the local materials demand

Google's USD 1 billion Chonburi facility is consuming rebar and structural steel at volumes appearing in Tata Steel Thailand's quarterly tracking. AWS committed USD 15 billion over five years and activated its Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region in January 2025. ByteDance / TikTok secured BOI approval for a tri-site investment of THB 126.8 billion (approximately USD 3.76 billion). Microsoft is leveraging True IDC facilities while pushing 80% non-China sourcing by 2026.

AWS is actively evaluating PCB suppliers for AI data center equipment, reducing reliance on Chinese partners. Google is pushing suppliers to ramp server production in Thailand. This supply chain decoupling creates a direct procurement opening for Thailand-based manufacturers of copper components, cabling, power distribution sub-assemblies, and sheet metal enclosures.

The overlap with PCB

Both industries consume copper at scale. PCB fabricators use copper for CCL, etching, plating, and HVLP foil. Data centers use copper for power cables, busway, transformer coils, and grounding. Sheet metal demand overlaps across PCB equipment housings, server racks, and cable trays. Power electronics, UPS, PDUs, switchgear, serve both PCB cleanroom power protection and data center critical power, with Delta, Schneider, and ABB serving both end markets from shared Thailand facilities.

Geographic density creates same-day fulfillment

ITEQ's CCL plant is 10 minutes from Gold Circuit Electronics. Topoint built a drill-bit plant within a stone's throw of GCE. The 304 Industrial Park hosts more than 14 PCB manufacturers. Two-thirds of new data center facilities sit in the EEC. EPC contractors sourcing racks from Delta in Amata City Chonburi, busway from ABB in Bangpoo, and cabling from Interlink can achieve next-day fulfillment within a 30-minute radius, a 'cluster express' window no other Southeast Asian region can replicate.

Resource competition through 2027

Data centers consume 50-100 times more power per hectare than PCB factories. The 2.87 GW pipeline exceeds three times the on-site generation at 304 Industrial Park. The EEC already faces water stress, and Google's Chonburi facility plus at least 19 other data centers will compete with PCB fabs for water allocation. Skilled labor competition is equally acute, production line manager salaries doubled to THB 80,000-100,000 per month over the past two years.
